Description:
This middle school course covers the history of the United States from its discovery by Leif Erikson through the reconstruction following the Civil War. Students will learn about the explorers, the native people, the early colonists, the birth of the new nation, the states that were added to the Union, the presidents who were in office, and the expansion of our country during this exciting period of history.
Class time will include rich discussions, maps, a timeline of events, memory work, videos, and hands-on activities to make history come alive and help students to connect with history in a personal way.
Expectations:
In addition to the two days of face-to-face classes, students are expected to work at least two more days under the supervision of the homeschool teacher. Each week, students will be expected to complete the
homework listed in the syllabus, which includes reading 2 lessons and completing assigned pages in the student workbook. They should come to class ready to discuss what they read at home. Students will also be given a number of memorization assignments and there will be one project to present in class at the end of the year. Homework should require at most 2.5 hours per week.

• 7th-grade reading level.
