Academic Classes for Students in Grades 6-12 (Revised 3/18/13)

Both Mondays and Wednesdays

Book lists will be provided at a later date; all English literature books will be rented for a nominal fee per year; a couple of other books will either be rented from Home Run or invoiced to parents.



 

First Period (8:15 AM – 9:45 AM)

           Basic English (Mrs. Carman)(Gr. 6-8)

Introductory composition, literature, grammar, and vocabulary.

English 1 (Mrs. Edge)(Gr. 7-9)

Intermediate essay writing, literature interpretation, grammar, vocabulary, and study skills

            Pre-Algebra (Mrs. Cunningham)

A review of all arithmetic concepts, introductory algebra and related topics, and geometry concepts

  

   Algebra 1 (Mrs. Watts)

Algebraic problem solving for first- and second-degree equations covering a variety of applications from geometry to practical word problems

 

            Algebra 2 (Mrs. Teel)  Class is full - waiting list only

Techniques for solving and graphing any equation or relation; covers logarithmic, exponential, and basic trigonometric relations. 

Pre-requisite:  Algebra 1

 

            Anatomy and Physiology (Mrs. Cline)

Study of the systems of the body

Pre-requisite:  Biology and students must be 16 years of age or older and in grade 11 or grade 12     

Lab fee:  $50

 

            Physics (Mrs. von Dohlen)

The study of Newton’s laws of motion, kinematics, dynamics, forces, work, energy, conservation laws, thermodynamics, electricity, electronics, electromagnetic energy, optics, quantum physics, and nuclear physics 

Pre-requisites:  Algebra 1 and 2

Lab fee:  $50

 

Second Period (9:50 AM-11:20 AM)

College-preparatory level composition, literature analysis, grammar, and vocabulary

            Basic Math (Mrs. Thorsen)

Review of arithmetic concepts/skills with emphasis on mastering and applying percents

 

            Geometry (Mrs. Teel)

Basic concepts of plane geometry— parallel and intersecting lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles, which will be integrated with algebra concepts consistent with the type of geometry problems that appear on the Scholastic Aptitude Test for college admission.

  American History (Mrs. Tierney) Class is full - waiting list only

Survey of the history of the United States from the Colonial Era to Reconstruction while emphasizing the Modern Era as they explore events, concepts, and people from a Biblical worldview.

 

  Physical Science (Mrs. von Dohlen) (Middle or HS)

Study of introductory physics of motion, Newton’s laws, gravity, and the principles of chemistry.

Pre-requisite:  Space and Earth Science and Pre-Algebra    

Lab fee:  $40 

 

Third Period (12:00 noon – 1:30 PM)

            English 2 (Mrs. Carman) (Gr. 9-11) Class is full - waiting list only

High school-level essay writing, literature analysis, grammar, and vocabulary

            Pre-Algebra (Mrs. Watts)

A review of all arithmetic concepts, introductory algebra and related topics, and geometry concepts

           

   Pre-Calculus (Mrs. Cunningham)

Topics in algebra ranging from polynomial, rational, and exponential functions to conic sections; trigonometry concepts such as Law of Sines and Cosines; analytic geometry and calculus concepts such as limits, derivatives, and integrals.   Important if planning to take college algebra or college pre-calculus class.

 

   Early Church and the Middle Ages (Mrs. Czarnik) (Middle School)

Study of world history from a Christian perspective from the Day of Pentecost to the invention of the printing press.  Students will read several historical novels about this period.

 

            Government first semester and Economics second semester (Mrs. Tierney) Class is full - waiting list only

Study of the foundations, structures, and functions of the political and governmental system of the United States from a Christian perspective. Introductory principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics, emphasis on the American system of free enterprise capitalism and the Biblical principles of work, wealth, and stewardship.  (Upper High School)

 

            General Science (Mrs. Cline) (Middle School) Class is full - waiting list only

Examination of the scientific method, designing experiments, and studying simple machines, archaeology, geology, paleontology, biology, and human anatomy and physiology.

Fourth Period (1:35 PM – 3:05 PM)

 

            Algebra 1 (Mrs. Teel)

Algebraic problem solving for first- and second-degree equations covering a variety of applications from geometry to practical word problems

 

   Early Church and the Middle Ages (Mrs. Czarnik) (Middle School)

Study of world history from a Christian perspective from the Day of Pentecost to the invention of the printing press.  Students will read several historical novels about this period.

 

  Geography (Mrs. Tierney) (High School)

Study of various cultural regions for a Biblical understanding of the earth, its people, and its resources; full-year course

 

  Space and Earth Science (Mrs. Watts) (Middle School)

Study of the earth—the atmosphere, the celestial sphere (outer space), the lithosphere (the solid part of the earth), and the hydrosphere.      

Lab fee:  $40

 

  Biology (Mrs. Cline) (High School) Class is full - waiting list only

Study of cellular biology, genetics, creationism, taxonomy, microbiology, botany, zoology, and human anatomy.

Lab fee:  $50

 

  Chemistry (Mrs. von Dohlen) (High School)
Class is full - waiting list only

Study of the foundation of atomic structure, bonding, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, nomenclature, kinetic theory, solutions, acids and bases, chemical equilibrium, organic and biochemistry, and nuclear chemistry.

Pre-requisite:  Algebra 1, Lab fee:  $50
